چکیده

This paper presents a convenient fonnulation for the stability analysis of structures using the finite element method. The main assumptions are linear elasticity, a linear fundamental path, and the existence of distinct critical loads (i.e. no coupling between buckling modes occurs). The fonnulation developed is known as W-formulation, in which the energy is written in terms of a sliding set of incremental coordinates measured with respect to the fundamental path. In the presentation developed here, the only ingredients required to carry out the analysis are the strain-displacement and the constitutive matrices at the element level. The present fonnulation is compared with the so called V-formulation, in which the displacements refer to the unloaded state. It is shown that under the present assumptions of linear fundamental path, the advantages of the V-formulation are lost and both approaches are similar. An example of a circular plate under in-plane loading illustrates the procedures. Part II of this paper deals with the application to the post buckling analysis of plate assemblies made of composite materials.

A New Finite Element Formulation for Buckling and Free Vibration Analysis of Timoshenko Beams on Variable Elastic Foundation

In this study, the buckling and free vibration of Timoshenko beams resting on variable elastic foundation analyzed by means of a new finite element formulation. The Winkler model has been applied for elastic foundation. A two-node element with four degrees of freedom is suggested for finite element formulation. Displacement and rotational fields are approximated by cubic and quadratic polynomia...

A Simple Finite Element Procedure for Free Vibration and Buckling Analysis of Cracked Beam-Like Structures

In this study, a novel and very simple finite element procedure is presented for free vibration and buckling analysis of slim beam-like structures damaged by edge cracks. A cracked region of a beam is modeled using a very short element with reduced second moment of area (I). For computing reduced I in a cracked region, the elementary theory of bending of beams and local flexibility approach are...

NONLINEAR POST-BUCKLING ANALYSIS OF ISOTROPIC PLATES BY USING FINITE STRIP METHODS

ABSTRACT This paper presents the theoretical developments of two finite strip methods (i.e. semi-analytical and full-analytical) for the post-buckling analysis of isotropic plates. In the semi-analytical finite strip approach, all the displacements are postulated by the appropriate shape functions while in the development process of the full-analytical approach, the Von-Karman’s equilibrium equ...

Finite Element Instability Analysis of the Steel Joist of Continuous Composite Beams with Flexible Shear Connectors

Composite steel/concrete beams may buckle in hogging bending regions. As the top flange of I-beam in that arrangement is restricted from any translational deformation and twist, the web will distort during buckling presenting a phenomenon often described as restricted distortional buckling. There are limited studies available in the literature of restricted distortional buckling of composite st...

Explicit Stiffness of Tapered and Monosymmetric i Beam-Columns

A formulation for finite element analysis of tapered and  monosymmetric I shaped beam-columns is presented. This is a general way to analyze these types of complex elements. Based upon the formulation, member stiffness matrix is obtained explicitly. The element considered has seven nodal degrees of freedom. In addition, the related stability matrix is found. Numerical studies of the aforementio...
